Not Bowing Out

Correction: Jose Carerras is not retiring from opera after all–at least not completely. (An article I linked to the other day reported that he was.)

I just finished writing an article about celebrity tenors, in which I note that, ever since the time of Caruso, a singer knows he’s really made it when the press simply can’t wait for him to retire or kick the bucket so they can start searching the wings for his replacement. Pavarotti told CBS’s 60 Minutes in 1993, “everybody is trying to kill me. Every newspaper is there ready to say when I am going to die!”

I guess with Placido Domingo out there singing Wagner roles, the media have honed in on Carerras as the next to go?
